Architects & Builders / Artists & Specifiers #2
Communicate effectively to replicate a hidden construction.
Architects & Builders is a collaborative game where participants must replicate a construction based on the instructions of an architect who is the only one to know the reference image. This game highlights the importance of clear communication, active listening, and mutual understanding within the team. It helps to strengthen teamwork skills and reveals communication dynamics.
Walkthrough
- 1
Introduction and Role Distribution
10 minThe facilitator explains the aim of the game: to replicate a construction based on the verbal instructions of an architect. Participants are divided into teams of 4 to 6 people. Each team selects an 'architect' who will be the only one to see the reference image. The others will be the 'builders'. The facilitator emphasises the importance of communication and listening.
Tip — Choose teams with varied communication levels to enrich the experience.
- 2
Presentation of the Reference Image
5 minThe architect of each team receives an image of the construction to replicate. They have a few minutes to observe it and mentally prepare their instructions. The builders must not see the image. The facilitator reminds that the architect can only use verbal instructions.
Tip — Encourage the architect to take mental or written notes to structure their instructions.
- 3
Construction Phase
20 minThe architects give their instructions to the builders to replicate the construction. The builders ask questions to clarify the instructions. The facilitator circulates to ensure that the communication rules are being followed and to offer advice if necessary.
Tip — Observe the communication dynamics and intervene if someone monopolises the conversation.
- 4
Construction Evaluation
10 minOnce the time is up, each team compares their construction with the reference image. The facilitator asks the teams to discuss the differences and similarities between their construction and the image. This step highlights the successes and communication errors.
Tip — Use a camera to capture the constructions for easy comparison with the reference image.
- 5
Feedback Session
15 minThe facilitator invites participants to share their feelings and the challenges faced. Teams discuss what worked well and possible improvements. This discussion reinforces learning about communication and teamwork.
Tip — Note the key points of the discussion on a board to visualise collective learning.
Variants
- Builders can only ask one question at a time before receiving a new instruction.
- Introduce a time constraint for each stage of the construction.
- Allow the architect to see the construction halfway through to adjust their instructions.
- Add disruptive elements, such as background noise, to simulate a noisy work environment.
