Dor Kards
Build your Definition of Done together with DoD Kards.
DoD Kards is a collaborative serious game that helps Scrum teams define their Definition of Done (DoD). Through cards representing potential criteria, participants discuss and align on what constitutes 'done' work. This game facilitates communication and alignment within the team, ensuring a shared understanding of quality and completion criteria.
Walkthrough
- 1
Introduction
10 minThe facilitator introduces the DoD Kards game and explains its objective: to collectively define the Definition of Done for the team. They clarify the difference between 'Definition of Done' and 'Definition of Ready', and why a DoD is crucial for transparency and quality of work in Scrum.
Tip — Use a concrete project example to illustrate the importance of a clear DoD.
- 2
Setup
5 minPlace the 'Yes', 'Later', and 'No' cards on a table or wall. Shuffle the criteria cards and place them face down. Explain that each criteria card represents a potential aspect of the DoD and that the team will need to decide where each card should be placed.
Tip — Ensure that everyone can see and reach the cards easily.
- 3
Gameplay
30 minEach participant, in turn, takes a criteria card, reads it aloud, and proposes to place it in one of the columns ('Yes', 'Later', 'No'). If a disagreement arises, the team discusses to reach a consensus. If no consensus is reached within the allotted time, the card goes into 'No'.
Tip — Limit the discussion time for each card to maintain the pace of the game.
- 4
Creating New Criteria
10 minExplain that participants can create their own criteria using blank cards. Encourage them to think about specific aspects of their work context that may not be covered by the existing cards.
Tip — Stimulate creativity by asking participants to think of past issues and how a clear DoD could have helped.
- 5
Finalisation
10 minOnce all cards have been processed, the facilitator summarises the accepted criteria ('Yes') and discusses the 'Later' ones for potential future inclusion. Encourage the team to display these criteria in a visible place or integrate them into their project management tool.
Tip — Take a photo of the final cards for easy digital follow-up.
Variants
- Add a strict time constraint for each card discussion to energise the game.
- Use the DoD Kards at the beginning of the sprint to adjust the DoD based on the specific sprint goals.
- Integrate 'risk' cards to discuss the potential consequences of not meeting certain criteria.
