The Secret Number

A silent ranking game to enhance team collaboration.

Duration · 5 min
Participants · 5–15
Level · Beginner

The Secret Number is a game where participants must coordinate to rank numbers without verbal communication. This game tests creativity and cooperation, encouraging the emergence of innovative solutions through non-verbal communication.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction

    5 min

The facilitator introduces the game and its objective: to rank a series of numbers without speaking. They explain that the exercise aims to improve non-verbal communication and cooperation. Participants are encouraged to think of creative ways to convey information without using words.

TipUse concrete examples to illustrate the importance of non-verbal communication in teamwork.

  2. 2

    Distribution of Cards

    5 min

Each participant receives a numbered card that they must not show to others. The cards should remain visible only to their owner. The facilitator checks that everyone understands the instruction not to speak during the exercise.

TipEnsure that the cards are large enough to be seen from a distance, but not by other participants.

  3. 3

    Silent Ranking

    15 min

Participants must move around the room to position themselves in line, from the smallest to the largest number, without speaking. They can use gestures or facial expressions to communicate. The facilitator observes and notes the strategies used by the group.

TipEncourage participants to be patient and to carefully observe others' attempts at communication.

  4. 4

    Verification

    5 min

Once the group thinks they have finished, the facilitator asks each participant to show their card, starting with the one who thinks they have the smallest number. The facilitator checks the order and indicates whether the ranking is correct.

TipBe kind, even if the order is incorrect, to encourage learning from mistakes.

  5. 5

    Group Reflection

    10 min

The facilitator invites participants to share their impressions of the exercise. Which gestures were the most effective? Did they notice any common strategies or particular difficulties? This sharing moment highlights group dynamics and improves future communication.

TipEncourage participants to express what they felt, not just what they did.

Variants

  • Add additional constraints, such as prohibiting arm movements.
  • Use cards with words or images to be ranked alphabetically.
  • Conduct the exercise outdoors to add a logistical challenge.
