The Human Knot

Develop team cohesion by untangling the Human Knot together.

Duration · 10 min
Participants · 12–20
Level · Beginner

The Human Knot is a collaborative game that challenges participants to physically untangle themselves while remaining connected to one another. It promotes communication, trust, and teamwork by requiring participants to work together to solve a complex situation. This game is ideal for breaking the ice and strengthening bonds within a group.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction to the Game

    5 min

The facilitator welcomes the participants and explains the objective of the game: 'Your mission is to untangle yourselves to form a circle without letting go of each other's hands.' They emphasise that the game requires listening and cooperation. Participants are invited to relax and prepare for the activity.

TipUse an engaging and positive tone to put participants at ease from the start.

  2. 2

    Formation of the Knot

    5 min

Participants form a circle and reach their hands towards the centre. Each person grabs two hands of others, ensuring not to hold the hands of their immediate neighbours. The facilitator checks that all hands are connected and that the knot is well formed.

TipEnsure that the knot is complex enough but not impossible to untangle, to maintain interest and avoid frustration.

  3. 3

    Untangling the Knot

    15 min

Participants attempt to untangle themselves by communicating and coordinating. They must keep their hands connected throughout the process. The facilitator encourages dialogue and reminds them of the importance of active listening and patience.

TipIntervene only if the group is stuck for too long, to give them a slight nudge without providing the solution.

  4. 4

    Finalisation

    5 min

Once the knot is untangled, participants form a circle. The facilitator congratulates the group for their effort and collaboration. They highlight key moments where communication was particularly effective.

TipTake photos of the group before and after to illustrate progress and reinforce the sense of achievement.

  5. 5

    Feedback Session

    10 min

The facilitator invites participants to share their feelings about the activity. They ask open-ended questions to encourage reflection on group dynamics and personal learnings.

TipBe attentive to participants' feedback to adjust the facilitation in future sessions.

Variants

  • Try to complete the exercise in silence to reinforce the importance of non-verbal communication.
  • Time the activity and encourage participants to beat their own record in a second attempt.
  • Form several knots in small groups and organise a friendly competition to see which group untangles the fastest.
