Stack Race

Stack cubes as a team with strategy and communication.

Duration · 3 min
Participants · 6–20
Level · Intermediate

Stack Race is a team game where participants must stack cubes according to specific spacing rules. This game emphasises collaboration, strategy, and effective communication. Teams must organise themselves and adapt quickly to successfully build the tallest stack possible within the allotted time.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction and Team Formation

    10 min

The facilitator begins by explaining the objectives of the game: to build the tallest stack while adhering to the spacing rules. They then divide the participants into teams of 4 to 6 people. Each team receives a set of cubes and a sheet with the spacing rules. The facilitator emphasises that communication and strategy will be crucial for success.

TipEnsure that each team fully understands the spacing rules before starting to avoid any confusion during the game.

  2. 2

    Explanation of the Rules

    10 min

The facilitator details the spacing rules: for example, each cube must be spaced at least one centimetre apart from the other cubes in the stack. They also explain the victory conditions: the tallest stack within the allotted time wins. Participants can ask questions to clarify the rules.

TipUse visual examples to illustrate the spacing rules; this will help participants better understand.

  3. 3

    Strategic Planning

    10 min

Each team has a few minutes to discuss and develop a strategy. Participants must decide who will be responsible for stacking, who will measure the spaces, and how they will communicate effectively. The facilitator circulates among the teams to answer questions and encourage strategic thinking.

TipEncourage teams to designate a leader to coordinate actions and ensure everyone is on the same page.

  4. 4

    Start of the Race

    20 min

At the facilitator's signal, the teams begin stacking their cubes. The facilitator monitors adherence to the rules and ensures safety. Teams must work quickly while respecting the spacing rules. The facilitator may announce the remaining time at regular intervals to maintain pressure.

TipUse a visible timer so that all teams are aware of the passing time; this adds a dimension of positive stress.

  5. 5

    Evaluation and Announcement of Results

    10 min

At the end of the allotted time, the facilitator measures the stacks of each team and checks compliance with the spacing rules. They then announce the results, congratulating the winning team. Teams are invited to applaud everyone's efforts.

TipTake photos of the stacks so that teams can keep a memory of their work.

Variants

  • Add additional time constraints to increase pressure.
  • Use objects of different shapes to complicate stacking.
  • Introduce penalties for each infraction of the spacing rules.
