The Daily Scrum
Enhance your Daily Scrum for optimised team collaboration.
The Daily Scrum is a practical simulation that allows teams to experience and analyse the flow of a daily meeting. This workshop helps teams improve their communication, identify obstacles, and strengthen cohesion. Ideal for agile teams, it promotes engagement and transparency through structured daily exchanges.
Walkthrough
- 1
Introduction to the Daily Scrum
10 minThe facilitator begins by explaining the purpose of the Daily Scrum: to synchronise the team, identify obstacles, and plan the day. They emphasise that this meeting should be quick and effective, lasting no more than 15 minutes. Participants are invited to share their expectations and ask questions about the workshop's flow.
Tip — Use a timer to help the team get accustomed to the limited duration of 15 minutes.
- 2
Daily Scrum Simulation
15 minParticipants take on the role of members of an agile team and simulate a Daily Scrum. Each member answers the three classic questions: 'What did I do yesterday?', 'What will I do today?', 'What obstacles am I facing?'. The facilitator observes and notes group dynamics and potential areas for improvement.
Tip — Encourage participants to be concise and focus on relevant information for the team.
- 3
Simulation Analysis
15 minAfter the simulation, the facilitator leads a discussion where participants share their feelings about the meeting. What aspects worked well? What elements could be improved? The facilitator guides the conversation to identify common obstacles and opportunities for improvement.
Tip — Take visible notes for everyone, such as on a whiteboard, to capture key ideas and observations.
- 4
Identifying Obstacles and Solutions
20 minParticipants work in small groups to identify obstacles encountered during the Daily Scrum and propose solutions. Each group then shares its ideas with the entire team. The facilitator helps prioritise solutions that could be implemented immediately.
Tip — Encourage the use of post-it notes so each group can easily share its ideas with the rest of the team.
- 5
Action Plan for the Daily Scrum
15 minThe facilitator assists the team in developing an action plan to improve their future Daily Scrums. This may include adjustments in format, timing, or participation. The team commits to trying these improvements in their upcoming meetings.
Tip — Ensure that the action plan is specific, measurable, and that each team member agrees to try it.
Variants
- Simulate a Daily Scrum with reversed roles to see the impact on dynamics.
- Integrate a neutral observer to provide external feedback.
- Conduct the Daily Scrum in a decentralised mode, using video conferencing tools for remote teams.
