Walkthrough

  1. 1

Introduction to the Sprint Goal Canvas

    10 min

The facilitator presents the Sprint Goal Canvas and its importance for Sprint Planning. They explain that this tool clarifies the sprint goal and ensures that the entire team is aligned. Participants are invited to ask questions to ensure they fully understand the objective of the exercise.

TipUse a concrete example to illustrate how a well-defined Sprint Goal can guide the team throughout the sprint.

  2. 2

    Defining Business Value

    15 min

The facilitator asks the team to reflect on the business value they wish to deliver during the sprint. Each team member proposes ideas that are noted on post-its and placed on the canvas. The goal is to focus on what will bring the most value to the end user.

TipEncourage participants to be specific and concrete to avoid generalities.

  3. 3

    Identifying Risks and Obstacles

    10 min

The team discusses potential risks and obstacles that could prevent achieving the goal. These elements are also noted on post-its and placed on the canvas. This step allows for anticipating challenges and planning actions to overcome them.

TipInvite each member to share at least one risk or obstacle to ensure a diversity of perspectives.

  4. 4

    Formulating the Sprint Goal

    20 min

Based on the previous discussions, the team collaboratively formulates the Sprint Goal. The facilitator ensures that the goal is clear, specific, and measurable. The Sprint Goal is written visibly so that everyone can validate it.

TipEnsure that the Sprint Goal is formulated in a simple sentence that is understandable by all.

  5. 5

    Validation and Commitment

    10 min

The team reviews the finalised Sprint Goal and each member expresses their commitment to this goal. The facilitator ensures that all participants are aligned and motivated to work towards this common objective.

TipAsk each participant to share one action they will take to contribute to achieving the Sprint Goal.

Variants

  • Use a virtual whiteboard for distributed teams.
  • Integrate a feedback loop mid-sprint to adjust the Sprint Goal if necessary.
