Cynefin Framework (Sense-Making)
Classify your problems to make better decisions with the Cynefin Framework.
The Cynefin Framework is a powerful tool to help teams understand the nature of the problems they face. By classifying these problems into five distinct domains, participants can choose the most appropriate approach for each situation. This enhances collective decision-making and management of complex challenges, allowing for better adaptation to change.
Walkthrough
- 1
Introduction to the Cynefin Framework
10 minIntroduce the Cynefin Framework by explaining its five domains: Simple, Complicated, Complex, Chaotic, and Disorder. Say: 'This framework helps us identify what type of situation we are in to choose the best approach.' Use a visual to illustrate these concepts and engage participants' interest.
Tip — Use concrete examples for each domain to illustrate how they apply in real life.
- 2
Brainstorming Problems
15 minAsk participants to individually reflect on recent problems or challenges they have encountered. Say: 'Take a few minutes to list problematic situations you have experienced recently.' Then, invite them to share these problems with the group.
Tip — Encourage a diversity of problems shared to enrich the discussion and analysis.
- 3
Classification of Problems
20 minDistribute post-its and ask participants to classify each problem into one of the five domains of the Cynefin Framework. Say: 'For each problem, place it in the domain that seems most relevant to you.' Facilitate the discussion to help clarify classification choices.
Tip — Be attentive to disagreements and use them to deepen the understanding of the different domains.
- 4
Analysis of Approaches
15 minFor each domain, discuss the recommended approaches. Say: 'For simple problems, a proven solution is sufficient. For complex problems, experiment and learn.' Encourage participants to share their experiences on what has worked or not in each domain.
Tip — Use industry or company examples to make the approaches more concrete.
- 5
Synthesis and Action Plan
20 minAsk participants to choose a problem to address and develop an action plan based on the classification and approaches discussed. Say: 'Choose a problem to solve and identify the next steps.' Encourage collaboration and resource sharing.
Tip — Ensure that each participant leaves the session with a concrete action to undertake.
Variants
- Use examples of problems specific to your sector to personalise the workshop.
- Organise the workshop in small groups to encourage deeper discussions.
- Incorporate fictional scenarios to practice classification without pressure.
