EBM Workshop (Evidence-Based Management)
Measure product value with EBM for informed decisions.
The EBM Workshop is an interactive session that allows participants to discover and apply the Evidence-Based Management framework proposed by Scrum.org. Participants will learn to assess value through the four Key Value Areas (KVA): Current Value (CV), Unreleased Value (UV), Time-to-Market (T2M), and Ability to Innovate (A2I). They will also define OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) to support continuous improvement and a clear product vision.
Walkthrough
- 1
Introduction to EBM
15 minThe facilitator begins by presenting the concept of EBM and its importance in product management. They briefly explain the four Key Value Areas (KVA) and how they help measure product value. Participants are invited to ask questions to clarify the framework.
Tip — Use concrete examples of products to illustrate each KVA and make the theory more tangible.
- 2
Exploration of KVAs
30 minDivide participants into four groups and assign each a KVA to explore: CV, UV, T2M, or A2I. Each group discusses its respective KVA, identifies potential indicators, and considers ways to collect data. After 20 minutes, each group presents its findings to the others.
Tip — Encourage groups to use whiteboards to visualise their ideas and facilitate discussion.
- 3
Defining OKRs
25 minParticipants work in small groups to define OKRs that support continuous improvement in the context of their KVAs. The facilitator provides examples of well-formulated OKRs and guides the groups in developing their own. Each group then shares its OKRs with the rest of the participants.
Tip — Ensure that the OKRs are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).
- 4
Practical Application
20 minParticipants choose a project or product they are currently working on and apply the concepts of EBM and the defined OKRs. They identify concrete actions to implement in order to align their projects with the principles of EBM.
Tip — Provide an action plan template to help participants structure their ideas and take action.
- 5
Sharing Learnings
15 minEach participant shares a key learning or action they plan to implement after the workshop. This helps consolidate learnings and publicly commit to applying the concepts discussed.
Tip — Encourage participants to note the commitments of others to promote follow-up and accountability.
Variants
- Organise a follow-up session one month later to assess progress made.
- Add a segment on data analysis to deepen the collection and interpretation of indicators.
- Include a role-playing exercise where participants defend their OKRs in front of an 'executive committee'.
