FeedForward (Marshall Goldsmith)

Transform feedback into future suggestions for constructive dialogue.

Duration · 45 min
Participants · 4–20
Level · Beginner

FeedForward is a method that focuses on the future by providing improvement suggestions rather than critiquing the past. This game encourages positive and constructive dialogue, reducing the tensions often associated with traditional feedback. It is ideal for enhancing communication and engagement within teams, fostering a culture of support and continuous growth.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction to FeedForward

    10 min

The facilitator begins by explaining the concept of FeedForward: instead of focusing on what went wrong, we focus on suggestions for the future. They say: 'Today, we will explore a method for giving constructive advice for the future. The goal is to create a positive and motivating environment.' Participants are invited to ask questions to clarify the concept.

TipUse concrete examples to illustrate the difference between feedback and FeedForward.

  2. 2

    Pair Formation

    5 min

Ask participants to pair up. Each pair should consist of people who do not work closely together on a daily basis to encourage a fresh perspective. The facilitator says: 'Choose a partner you don't usually work closely with.'

TipEncourage participants to choose someone they know little about to maximise the impact of new suggestions.

  3. 3

    FeedForward Session

    15 min

Each person has 5 minutes to receive suggestions from their partner. The facilitator specifies: 'For 5 minutes, one person listens without interrupting while the other gives three suggestions for the future.' The roles are then reversed. Participants should focus on specific and actionable suggestions.

TipRemind participants to frame their suggestions in a positive and encouraging manner.

  4. 4

    Large Group Sharing

    10 min

Each pair shares one or two suggestions they found particularly helpful with the rest of the group. The facilitator says: 'Share a suggestion that inspired you and explain why.' This allows for collective idea generation and inspires others.

TipNote key suggestions on a board so that everyone can draw inspiration from them.

  5. 5

    Personal Reflection

    10 min

Participants take a few minutes to reflect individually on how they can implement the suggestions received. The facilitator says: 'Take a moment to think about how you can integrate these suggestions into your daily work.'

TipEncourage participants to write down their reflections for future reference.

  6. 6

    Closure and Thanks

    5 min

The facilitator thanks the participants for their openness and engagement. They conclude by saying: 'Thank you all for your active participation. I hope these suggestions will help you progress and achieve your future goals.'

TipEncourage participants to continue using FeedForward in their daily interactions.
