Marshmallow Challenge

Build the tallest structure with spaghetti and a marshmallow in 18 minutes.

Duration · 18–30 min
Participants · 4–30
Level · Beginner

The Marshmallow Challenge is a collaborative workshop where teams must build the tallest freestanding structure possible using spaghetti, tape, and string, placing a marshmallow on top. This game highlights rapid prototyping, collaboration under constraints, and provides an experience of iterative learning and experimentation.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction and Team Formation

    5 min

The facilitator begins by explaining the goal of the game: to build the tallest possible structure with the provided materials, while placing a marshmallow on top. They then divide the participants into teams of 4 to 5 people and distribute the materials to each group.

TipEnsure that each team has a clear and defined workspace to avoid interference.

  2. 2

    Explanation of the Rules

    5 min

The facilitator clarifies the rules: each team has 20 spaghetti sticks, 1 metre of string, 1 metre of tape, and one marshmallow. The allotted time is 18 minutes. The marshmallow must be placed on top of the structure. The structure must be freestanding.

TipUse a visible timer for everyone to manage time and remind key moments.

  3. 3

    Construction

    18 min

Teams begin constructing their structures. The facilitator circulates among the groups to observe work dynamics and encourage communication and experimentation. They may remind teams of the remaining time at regular intervals.

TipEncourage teams to quickly test their ideas and adjust based on results.

  4. 4

    Measuring the Structures

    5 min

At the end of the allotted time, the facilitator measures the height of each structure with the marshmallow on top. They then announce which team built the tallest structure.

TipUse a tape measure for precise measurements and announce the results enthusiastically to maintain energy.

  5. 5

    Debriefing

    15 min

The facilitator leads a debriefing session, asking questions to explore the strategies used, challenges faced, and lessons learned. They encourage participants to reflect on how these experiences can be applied to real work contexts.

TipUse a whiteboard to note key ideas and learnings shared by participants.

Variants

  • Try the challenge with a limited time of 15 minutes to increase the pressure.
  • Allow the use of scissors for the string and tape to see how this changes strategies.
  • Conduct a second round where teams can improve their initial structure based on feedback.
