Debriefing Kards

Debrief effectively with Kards in collective intelligence.

Duration · 10 min
Participants · 4–20
Level · Beginner

The Debriefing Kards are an innovative tool to facilitate group debriefing, following proven models such as Kirkpatrick or CIPP. They encourage the involvement of each participant and promote enriching collective reflection. This game allows teams to get to know each other better and collaborate more effectively, focusing on flows and inter-team dependencies.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction and objectives

    10 min

The facilitator presents the workshop and its objectives. "We will explore and improve our inter-team collaboration through a serious game." Participants are informed that they will use the Debriefing Kards to structure their post-game reflection.

TipUse a visual aid to clarify the objectives and steps of the game.

  2. 2

    Setting up the game

    10 min

The facilitator divides participants into teams of 6 to 8 people. Each team receives a bucket of coloured balls and a play area. The rules of the game are explained: each ball must be touched by every team member without being passed to a direct neighbour.

TipEnsure that each participant fully understands the rules before starting.

  3. 3

    First iterations

    20 min

Teams begin with two minutes of preparation, followed by two minutes of play and two minutes of retrospective. They estimate how many balls they will be able to handle and discuss possible improvements after each round.

TipEncourage teams to experiment and adjust their strategies with each iteration.

  4. 4

    Introduction of the challenge

    15 min

After four iterations, the facilitator introduces a challenge: each team must exchange three balls with the neighbouring team. The new rules include inter-team dependencies, requiring collaboration to handle different coloured balls.

TipObserve group dynamics and intervene if necessary to clarify the new rules.

  5. 5

    Iterations with the challenge

    20 min

Teams have three minutes to prepare before playing three additional rounds with the new rules. Retrospectives are extended to three minutes to allow for in-depth reflection on the challenges encountered.

TipUse a visible timer to keep the pace and ensure teams adhere to the allotted times.

  6. 6

    Debriefing with the Kards

    30 min

Participants use the Debriefing Kards to structure their post-game reflection. They start with silent brainstorming, then share in pairs, in small groups, and finally in plenary. Key themes are discussed collectively.

TipEncourage free expression and ensure that every voice is heard during the debriefing.

Variants

  • Use balls of different sizes to simulate varying priorities or complexities.
  • Add an observer role in each team to note interactions and suggest improvements.
  • Introduce a stricter time constraint to increase pressure and observe adaptations.
