Dod Kards

Clarify your Definition of Done with Dod Kards.

Duration · 25 min
Participants · 4–12
Level · Beginner

Dod Kards is a collaborative card game designed to help teams define a clear and shared Definition of Done (DoD). Using cards that represent criteria and choices, participants discuss and align on what 'done' really means. This game promotes open communication and alignment of expectations within the team.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

    Introduction to the game

    10 min

The facilitator explains the objective of the game: to clarify and align the team's Definition of Done. They present the cards and their meanings: the 'criteria' cards represent potential elements of the DoD, while the 'choice' cards allow for nuance in the criteria. Participants are invited to ask questions to ensure they understand the purpose of the game.

TipUse a concrete example of a DoD to illustrate how a criterion can be interpreted differently by each team member.

  2. 2

    Distribution of cards

    5 min

The facilitator distributes a set of 'criteria' and 'choice' cards to each participant. They explain that each participant should individually reflect on what they consider essential for a task to be deemed complete. Participants take a few minutes to review their cards and think about their importance.

TipEncourage participants not to rush and to truly consider the relevance of each criterion for their work context.

  3. 3

    Group discussion

    20 min

Participants regroup to discuss the cards they have chosen as essential. Each participant explains why they selected certain criteria. The facilitator facilitates the discussion, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to express themselves and that different viewpoints are heard.

TipEncourage participants to ask clarifying questions rather than directly critiquing others' choices.

  4. 4

    Establishing the Definition of Done

    15 min

Together, the team selects the criteria that will form their common Definition of Done. The facilitator guides the group to reach a consensus, noting the chosen criteria on a visible board. Participants can use the 'choice' cards to nuance or modify the selected criteria.

TipUse a whiteboard or flip chart to visualise the selected criteria and facilitate consensus.

  5. 5

    Validation and adjustments

    10 min

Once the Definition of Done is established, the facilitator asks the team to reflect on its feasibility and clarity. Participants can propose adjustments if necessary. The facilitator ensures that all team members are aligned and understand the new DoD.

TipEnsure that the final DoD is documented and accessible to all team members for future reference.

Variants

  • Add 'obstacle' cards to discuss potential challenges in implementing the chosen criteria.
  • Limit the number of 'criteria' cards each participant can choose to encourage prioritisation.
  • Play the game in two stages: first individually, then in pairs before the group discussion.
