Now How Wow Matrix
Prioritise your ideas based on their originality and feasibility.
The Now How Wow Matrix is a visual tool that helps teams evaluate and prioritise their ideas based on their originality and complexity of implementation. It sorts ideas into three categories: those that are easy to implement (How), those that are innovative but complex (Wow), and those that are both simple and original (Now). This exercise is ideal for brainstorming sessions and strategic planning.
Walkthrough
- 1
Introduction to the Matrix
10 minStart by explaining the objective of the workshop: to classify ideas according to their originality and feasibility. Present the matrix with its three sections: Now (easy and original), How (easy but not original), and Wow (original but complex). Ensure that all participants clearly understand these categories.
Tip — Use concrete examples to illustrate each category of the matrix.
- 2
Idea Generation
15 minAsk participants to individually think of ideas related to the workshop topic. Each participant writes their ideas on post-its, one idea per post-it. Encourage creativity and ensure there are a good number of ideas to evaluate.
Tip — Use a timer to maintain energy and encourage rapid idea generation.
- 3
Placing Ideas on the Matrix
20 minInvite participants to come and place their post-its on the matrix according to their perception of the originality and feasibility of each idea. Encourage discussion and debate to clarify the positioning of the ideas.
Tip — Facilitate discussions by asking open-ended questions to help evaluate ideas objectively.
- 4
Discussion and Adjustment
15 minOnce all ideas are placed, lead a discussion to reassess certain ideas if necessary. Encourage participants to justify their choices and adjust the positioning of ideas accordingly.
Tip — Be attentive to ensure every voice is heard and that no idea is dismissed without discussion.
- 5
Selection of Priority Ideas
10 minWith the group, identify the ideas in the Now zone that should be prioritised for implementation. Also discuss the Wow ideas that would merit additional resources to overcome their complexity.
Tip — Use a point voting system to help prioritise ideas if the group struggles to reach a decision.
Variants
- Use different coloured post-its to distinguish individual ideas from team ideas.
- Add a fourth category, 'Meh', for ideas that are neither original nor complex.
- Integrate a group vote to assess the potential impact of ideas in addition to their originality and feasibility.
